How to Properly Clear Water From Your Scuba Mask?

More often than not, water seeps into the scuba mask to flood the compartments that are tightly sealed across the diver’s face. Now this won’t do well with the scuba diver’s field of vision, particularly when cruising dive sites with low-visibility profiles.Given the propensity to get a flooded mask during the dive, beginners are expertly instructed to master the skill of clearing or purging water from the scuba mask. In fact, mask clearing is categorized as one of top scuba diving skills a neophyte diver should practice extensively while on training and then again during the safety stops of an open dive; until such time that the diver becomes adept with pertinent masks skills and comfortable over procedures related to the scuba gear. Thus to get into the groove of scuba diving, a prospective diver should not only learn how to adjust the buckles, skirt and strap to get an air tight, comfortable fit but also master the methods of purging water that settles on the bottom of the scuba gear to obscure the diver’s view.

Non Purge Scuba Mask
When using non purge scuba masks, water is cleared in the following manner:

  1. Tilt your heads towards the surface.
  2. Hold the scuba gear firmly using one hand; particularly over the upper middle section of the frame so that the mask pushes a bit tightly against your forehead.
  3. Consequently blow through your nose to let air drive the water out of the mask.
  4. Don’t forget to exhale as you put your head back into position. This way, water is prevented from rushing into your nose.

Scuba Mask with Purge Button
Some scuba masks are outfitted with a one-way purge valve that is intended to assist the scuba diver when the need to clear or purge water out of the mask arises. When using its purge assist, do the following:

  1. Hold the scuba gear firmly with both hands; particularly on both the upper end sections of the frame.
  2. Bend and look down at an angle where the purge button joins the lowest portion of the mask .
  3. Consequently exhale through your nose to let the air drive the water out through the purge mechanism.

Water in contact with the eyes forges a refracted vision of images to promote a distorted view of underwater surroundings. In this regard, the tempered lenses of the scuba mask creates an air space, allowing light to permeate the eyes naturally and making it possible for divers to see objects more distinctively underwater.
